Man in Suffolk Corrections Officer Death Freed on Bail

first_imgSign up for our COVID-19 newsletter to stay up-to-date on the latest coronavirus news throughout New York Anthony OddoneAnthony Oddone, whose manslaughter conviction in the choking death of a Southampton bar bouncer was overturned this month, will spend the holidays at home after he was released on bail Monday in advance of his new trial. The 31-year-old was freed on $500,000 bail as he awaits a re-trial on manslaughter charges stemming from the fatal Aug. 7, 2008 bar fight in which off-duty Suffolk County Corrections Officer Andrew Reister, moonlighting as a bouncer at Southampton Publick House, was left brain dead, dying two days later. The fight started when Oddone and a woman were dancing on a table top and he refused Reister’s request to get down. A year later, Oddone was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced in April 2010.But, earlier this month, a New York State Appellate Court overturned the verdict and ordered a new trial. At issue was the court’s refusal to allow the defense to refresh the recollection of a witness, Megan Flynn, who had told an insurance company investigator that the duration of the fight she witnessed lasted “maybe 6 to 10 seconds.” Flynn, a waitress at the bar, testified that what she observed could have lasted longer.“I didn’t have a watch,” she said, according to court documents. “I wasn’t keeping track of time. But it could have been a minute or so. I don’t know.”Oddone’s attorneys tried to show Flynn her previous statement to “refresh her recollection” in court but the judge ruled that she had “given no indication she needs her memory refreshed,” according to court documents.“We agree with defendant that the restriction placed on his questioning of Flynn was error requiring new trial,” the appeals court wrote in its unanimous decision.Oddone is scheduled to appear back in court Feb. 5.last_img read more

Lending Perspectives: Our role in solving the student loan crisis

first_img continue reading » Recently, a group of credit unions that made private student loans to consumers who attended ITT Technical College were ordered to pay $7 million to finalize a previous settlement. This $7 million was on top of the $150 million in loans that had been ordered by a court to be forgiven. In 2014, ITT Technical College made Time magazine’s list of “the five colleges that leave the most students crippled by debt” before its closing and bankruptcy in 2016. Before 2016, a year’s tuition at ITT ranged from $45,000 to $85,000, depending on the degree program. Unlike the old adage about “you get what you pay for,” many of the students received a worthless degree.Over the last 20 years, the costs of college education and the resulting debt have gone up faster than personal incomes. There is no way we as an industry can look at this as anything other than an unsustainable trend. But what’s causing it? Pew Trust has shown that while higher education is supported by both state and federal funding, states have slowed the growth of spending on high education. First result: a larger gap borne by students. Second result: that gap has been financed by an exponential growth in private student lending. Third result: a generation of college grads are now faced with nearly catastrophic debt. PSG get tough with Neymar after pre-season no-show

first_imgAfter they club said it would take action, PSG’s newly installed Brazilian sporting director Leonardo told Le Parisien newspaper that “Neymar can leave PSG if there is an offer that suits everybody.”Sports daily L’Equipe’s headline was: “With Leo (Leonardo), there’s no longer any joking around.”Barcelona, currently embroiled in efforts to sign Antoine Griezmann, have yet to publicly express an interest in Neymar.Barca’s vice-president Jordi Cardoner said last week: “What is correct, at the current time, what I have read, what I have heard, which seems exact, is that Neymar wants to come back to Barcelona.”Spanish sports newspaper Diario Sport claims a five-year contract has been agreed with Neymar agreeing to a cut in salary from around 36 million euros a year at PSG to the 24 million euros he received at Barca in 2017.In four years at Barcelona, the 27-year-old won the Champions League in 2015 and two La Liga titles, forming a brilliant attacking trio with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.Any return for Neymar would likely require Barca to raise funds through sales. Frenkie de Jong has already signed for 75 million euros from Ajax. Griezmann is expected to join from Atletico Madrid for 120 million euros, although that deal has hit snags. On Sunday, Griezmann failed to show up for pre-season at Atletico and the Spanish club, like PSG, threatened to punish their star striker.Neymar’s time at PSG has been punctuated by injury and controversy. He was questioned by Brazilian police last month over allegations he raped a woman he met through social media in a Paris hotel. He has denied the accusations and his father says it was a blackmail attempt.Neymar will miss three Champions League matches next season as punishment for insulting a referee following Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League collapse against Manchester United.Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has warned Neymar and his other highly-paid stars that they must shape-up or ship out, claiming “celebrity behaviour” at the French champions will not be tolerated.“The players will have to assume their responsibilities even more than before,” Al-Khelaifi told France Football.Share on: WhatsApp FILE PHOTO: NeymarParis, France | AFP | French club Paris Saint-Germain said they would take “appropriate action” after Neymar failed to show up for pre-season training with the French champions.Neymar, the world’s most expensive player after moving to PSG for 222 million euros ($252 million) two years ago, had watched his country win the Copa America in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday night. But when PSG players including France World Cup-winning striker Kylian Mbappe reported back for training and pre-season medical checks in the French capital on Monday, Neymar was nowhere to be seen.PSG said in a statement: “On Monday 8 July Neymar da Silva Santos Junior was due to return to pre-season activities with the Paris Saint-Germain senior squad.“Paris Saint-Germain notes that Neymar Jr was not in attendance at the agreed time and place. This was without the club’s prior authorisation.“The club regrets this situation and will therefore take appropriate action.”Brazilian media quoted Neymar’s father as saying that PSG “were aware” the striker would be unable to return to the club for another week.“The reason was known and planned for a year as part of his activities for the Neymar Institute (charity foundation),” said Neymar Senior. He added: “We couldn’t postpone them and he will return (to PSG) on July 15.“It’s as simple as that, no drama. PSG are aware and take part in the Institute’s activities.”Neymar is undergoing treatment on the torn ankle ligaments that ruled him out of the Copa America.– Lack of tolerance –His absence is likely to fuel rumours that he could make a surprise move back to Barcelona, the club he left to join PSG, this summer.French media noted that what was striking was PSG’s lack of tolerance of Neymar’s behaviour.last_img read more

Steelers rounding into form as second half looms

first_imgPittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown (84) celebrates making a first down catch during the fourth quarter of an NFL football game against the Indianapolis Colts in Pittsburgh, Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014. The Steelers won 51-34. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar)PITTSBURGH (AP) – Mike Tomlin isn’t interested in progress reports. The final grade is all that matters to the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach. So forgive Tomlin if he’s not ready to assess his team or the division it plays in as the season reaches its midway point.“It’s easy to write and tell stories at the turn, I’m not going to,” he said. The way Tomlin figures it, if the AFC North is the toughest division in the NFL it’ll play out over the next two months. By then the fact Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Baltimore and Cleveland are all over .500 heading into November may be long forgotten.“I think if we are (the best) it’s going to be revealed in the second half of the season,” he said. One thing is for certain, however. After a sluggish start the Steelers are in the mix. Pittsburgh (5-3) finally has momentum heading into Sunday’s rematch with the rival Ravens (5-3). The Steelers have won two straight for the first time all season and looked every bit the role of contender while dismantling Indianapolis 51-34 last weekend.Tomlin praised the offensive line, particularly right tackle Mike Adams, for giving quarterback Ben Roethlisberger all the time necessary to pass for a club record 522 yards passing and six touchdowns. Adams filled in capably with starter Marcus Gilbert out with a concussion, helping Roethlisberger get off 49 attempts without getting sacked once.Though Gilbert will be back in the lineup barring a setback this week, Tomlin’s assessment of Adams’ play against the Colts might as well double as a status report on a team that spent the first half of the year searching for consistency as it flip-flopped wins and losses regardless of who was on the other side of the field.“I thought he was a finisher,” Tomlin said of Adams. “I just liked his performance. A big arrow pointed up relative to some of his other performances.”Yet the Steelers are wary of how quickly the arrow can change direction. They felt pretty good about themselves after a road victory at Carolina in Week 3 then followed it up with a still hard to fathom home loss to Tampa Bay.Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger believes he leads one of the most talented offenses in the league. The tricky part is trying to get it to perform that way on a weekly basis. After some troubling growing pains, the Steelers appear ready to hit their stride. While Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell give Pittsburgh one of the best quarterback/wide receiver/running back combinations in the NFL, it’s the development of the players around them that has keyed the recent surge.Rookie receiver Martavis Bryant needed six weeks to earn a spot on the active roster. The 6-foot-4 fourth-round pick has quickly emerged as a valuable target, catching three touchdowns in his first two games. Veteran Lance Moore languished on the depth chart behind Justin Brown but has flourished since moving into the slot position he felt he deserved to hold all along. Second-year wideout Markus Wheaton emerged from a lengthy slump to catch an 18-yard scoring pass from Roethlisberger against Indianapolis that jolted the Steelers to lifeOut of the entire group, Bell might be the best pass catcher on the team not named Brown. He already has 42 receptions at the midway point“We know what we’re capable of,” Bell said. “We showed everybody. Now we have to go out there and put performance on top of performance.”It’s what Tomlin calls “stacking wins.” How high the pile becomes will depend on if the offense can finish drives the way it did against Indianapolis – when five of six red zone possessions ended in touchdowns – and if the defense can create even a little bit of chaos. That hasn’t happened with any regularity so far, though there were flashes against the Colts. The Steelers sacked Andrew Luck twice and sent him to the turf so often Colt’s pristine No. 12 white jersey was a decidedly darker shade by game’s end. Pittsburgh will need to keep the pressure on to compensate for a secondary that struggles to stay in front of anyone.Cortez Allen’s rise to the role of shutdown corner has come to an abrupt stop. Luck picked on Allen repeatedly, with most of the passes resulting in big plays or penalties. It’s not what the Steelers had in mind when they signed Allen to a five-year extension on the eve of the season opener. While Tomlin stresses he has confidence Allen can bounce back, Allen will need a good week of practice just to start against the Ravens.“Often times he’s in position … but positioning is just an element of it,” Tomlin said. “You’ve got to finish.”A message sure to resonate throughout a locker room eager for a return to the postseason after a two-year absence.___Online:http://pro32.ap.org/poll and http://twitter.com/AP_NFLlast_img read more

ALEXANDER HOMEBRED TOUGH IT OUT RALLIES TO WIN $200,000 ECHO EDDIE BY 4 ½ LENGTHS UNDER TALAMO; D’AMATO TRAINEE GETS 6 ½ FURLONGS IN SLOP IN 1:17.60

first_imgARCADIA, Calif. (April 9, 2016)–Nick Alexander’s homebred Tough It Out came with a late rush to take command a sixteenth of a mile out en route to winning Saturday’s $200,000 Echo Eddie Stakes at Santa Anita by 4 ½ lengths. Trained by Phil D’Amato and ridden by Joe Talamo, the 3-year-old Grazen gelding got 6 ½ furlongs over a sloppy track in 1:17.60.“This is just a tremendous feeling,” said D’Amato, who registered his second win of the day and now has a commanding five win lead (39-34) in the Winter Meet trainer standings with just one day remaining. “Mike Mitchell (his late mentor) and Nick Alexander. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them.”Off at 5-1 in a field of nine California-bred or sired horses, Tough It Out paid $12.20, $5.80 and $3.40. Out of the Marquetry mare Mark Set Go, Tough It Out picked up $120,000 for the win, more than doubling his earnings to $212,790. The Echo Eddie represents his first stakes win and improves his overall record to 8-2-1-2.“We had a good trip,” said Talamo. “Phil just told me to ride him like Kent Desormeaux on Exaggerator, so we stayed in the five path and went from there. I thought the track was pretty fair for the first few races, and these last few, you can come from behind. It feels great.”Ridden by Gary Stevens, Gold Rush Dancer made a bold move at the rail three furlongs out, opened up by about three lengths with a furlong to run, but was no match for the winner late.Off at 6-1, Gold Rush Dancer finished a length in front of Xingontothebone and paid $8.00 and $4.80.Ridden by Martin Pedroza, Xingontothebone rallied three wide through the lane and proved third-best. Off at 4-1, he paid $3.60 to show.Fractions on the race were 21.97, 45.53 and 1:11.28. ECHO EDDIE PART OF LUCRATIVE GOLDEN STATE SERIES FOR CALIFORNIA-BRED OR SIRED HORSESlast_img read more
