Smart beta products facing transparency problems, investors say

first_imgSource: EDHEC-Risk InstituteThe survey found that improving performance and managing risk were the most important motivation for adopting smart beta strategies. The vast majority of respondents (94%) planned to increase their investment in smart beta products over the next three years.Respondents also said they would like more customised solutions to be developed, as well as offerings in fixed income and alternative asset classes. The full survey report can be found here.LGIM leads European smart beta IPE’s latest Top 400 Asset Managers report showed that Legal & General Investment Management was the leading manager of smart beta portfolios on behalf of European institutional clients is, with over €30bn of assets.Robeco, BlackRock, and Insight Investment Management followed in the ranking of the largest European institutional smart beta managers, IPE’s proprietary research showed. The data was correct to the end of 2016.In terms of exchange-traded funds, BlackRock was by far the largest manager with €253bn of assets managed for European institutions. Deutsche Asset Management was next, with more than €50bn, while Germany’s Assenagon Asset Management and France’s Amundi were in distant third and fourth place respectively. Investors are struggling to get important information about smart beta strategies, according to a survey by EDHEC-Risk Institute. The research found there was an “important” gap between the information investors required to assess smart beta products and the ease of access to this information. The survey – of 211 European investment professionals – found that a lack of transparency was the second most important hurdle to increasing smart beta investments for respondents, after “methodological issues” with smart beta strategies.“The fact that information that is regarded as important is not considered to be easily available clearly calls into question the information provision practices of smart beta providers,” said the EDHEC-Risk Institute. “In fact, the only area in which no pronounced gap exists between the importance and the ease of accessibility scores is for performance numbers. “Performance and risk information is judged to be moderately easily available and moderately important.”Asked about the information they consider most important to assess smart beta, respondents said information about liquidity and capacity, index construction methodology, and transaction costs were important. They were also asked how easy it was to obtain this information. The biggest gap between importance and accessibility of information was in relation to data-mining risk. This scored 3.59 in terms of importance (on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being “crucial”) and 2.06 in terms of ease of access (with 0 being difficult to obtain). The second biggest gap between the importance of information and its ease of access was in relation to liquidity and capacity. Respondents deemed this the most important piece of information, with a score of 4, but scored it with 2.80 for ease of access.last_img read more

NHL trade rumors: Capitals’ GM Brian MacLellan ‘talking to some teams’ about Andre Burakovsky

first_imgGeneral manager Brian MacLellan said that there is the possibility that the 24-year-old winger could be dealt this summer. MacLellan says he and the team are continuing to assess their options, especially with eight other free agents to address, including Burakovsky.”We’re still talking to some teams,” MacLellan told Sporting News in regards to shopping Burakovsky.NHL free agency rumors: Top RFAs in the Metropolitan DivisionThis past season, the Swedish forward finished with just 12 goals and 25 points in 76 games, the same exact total he managed in 20 fewer games the previous year. His career has not only been plagued by lengthy cold streaks and only flashes of potential, but he’s also experienced multiple injuries that have affected on his play.Burakovsky’s performance has led to not only a lack of confidence and being scratched from time to time, but made him the center of trade rumors, tossing his future with the team up in the air. Many expected him to be dealt at the deadline, but the Capitals kept him around. It seemed to prove well for the winger as he registered four points in five games and seemed to put a spark in his eye. However, the strong play didn’t last long as he managed just one more point until the end of the regular season.”I think Andre had a frustrating year, but he finished it up well,” MacLellan said. “There’s been some inconsistencies there, but when he’s on his game, he’s a good player.”That being said, he may not be able to stick around, especially given Washington’s cap situation. Right now, the NHL salary cap is up in the air, and Washington still has its aforementioned free agents to deal with. Additionally, the Capitals have to pay attention to their future, as star players Nicklas Backstrom and Braden Holtby will need high-paying extensions next summer.MORE: Tracking the NHL initial buyout periodMacLellan said the team has been in touch with Burakovsky’s agent and that they would “like to keep him around,” but it may not be that simple. He’s also keeping his options open and hearing out offers from other clubs, but for now, Burakovsky is here to stay unless the price is right.”We’re not going to move him unless we feel comfortable getting something back,” MacLellan said. The Washington Capitals are stuggling with cap space and have a number of free agents to address, including big names like Jakub Vrana, Brett Connolly, Brooks Orpik and perhaps most importantly, Andre Burakovsky. The 2013 first-round pick, who has struggled with inconsistency throughout his career, may be on the move heading into the offseason. One potential suggestion would be to make a one-for-one trade with the Edmonton Oilers and deal Burakovsky for Jesse Puljujarvi. The disgruntled winger from Sweden recently  requested a trade and is another up-and-coming player who would benefit from a change in scenery.Moving forward, Burakovsky says he would like to remain in D.C. to continue to improve his game and put his struggles behind him.”I love Washington,” Burakovsky said. “My goal is to stay and hopefully, I will be able to. It has been up and down for sure… obviously want to be more consistent and I think I learned a lot … I think I am on the right path for sure.”last_img read more

PSG get tough with Neymar after pre-season no-show

first_imgAfter they club said it would take action, PSG’s newly installed Brazilian sporting director Leonardo told Le Parisien newspaper that “Neymar can leave PSG if there is an offer that suits everybody.”Sports daily L’Equipe’s headline was: “With Leo (Leonardo), there’s no longer any joking around.”Barcelona, currently embroiled in efforts to sign Antoine Griezmann, have yet to publicly express an interest in Neymar.Barca’s vice-president Jordi Cardoner said last week: “What is correct, at the current time, what I have read, what I have heard, which seems exact, is that Neymar wants to come back to Barcelona.”Spanish sports newspaper Diario Sport claims a five-year contract has been agreed with Neymar agreeing to a cut in salary from around 36 million euros a year at PSG to the 24 million euros he received at Barca in 2017.In four years at Barcelona, the 27-year-old won the Champions League in 2015 and two La Liga titles, forming a brilliant attacking trio with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.Any return for Neymar would likely require Barca to raise funds through sales. Frenkie de Jong has already signed for 75 million euros from Ajax. Griezmann is expected to join from Atletico Madrid for 120 million euros, although that deal has hit snags. On Sunday, Griezmann failed to show up for pre-season at Atletico and the Spanish club, like PSG, threatened to punish their star striker.Neymar’s time at PSG has been punctuated by injury and controversy. He was questioned by Brazilian police last month over allegations he raped a woman he met through social media in a Paris hotel. He has denied the accusations and his father says it was a blackmail attempt.Neymar will miss three Champions League matches next season as punishment for insulting a referee following Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League collapse against Manchester United.Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has warned Neymar and his other highly-paid stars that they must shape-up or ship out, claiming “celebrity behaviour” at the French champions will not be tolerated.“The players will have to assume their responsibilities even more than before,” Al-Khelaifi told France Football.Share on: WhatsApp FILE PHOTO: NeymarParis, France | AFP | French club Paris Saint-Germain said they would take “appropriate action” after Neymar failed to show up for pre-season training with the French champions.Neymar, the world’s most expensive player after moving to PSG for 222 million euros ($252 million) two years ago, had watched his country win the Copa America in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday night. But when PSG players including France World Cup-winning striker Kylian Mbappe reported back for training and pre-season medical checks in the French capital on Monday, Neymar was nowhere to be seen.PSG said in a statement: “On Monday 8 July Neymar da Silva Santos Junior was due to return to pre-season activities with the Paris Saint-Germain senior squad.“Paris Saint-Germain notes that Neymar Jr was not in attendance at the agreed time and place. This was without the club’s prior authorisation.“The club regrets this situation and will therefore take appropriate action.”Brazilian media quoted Neymar’s father as saying that PSG “were aware” the striker would be unable to return to the club for another week.“The reason was known and planned for a year as part of his activities for the Neymar Institute (charity foundation),” said Neymar Senior. He added: “We couldn’t postpone them and he will return (to PSG) on July 15.“It’s as simple as that, no drama. PSG are aware and take part in the Institute’s activities.”Neymar is undergoing treatment on the torn ankle ligaments that ruled him out of the Copa America.– Lack of tolerance –His absence is likely to fuel rumours that he could make a surprise move back to Barcelona, the club he left to join PSG, this summer.French media noted that what was striking was PSG’s lack of tolerance of Neymar’s behaviour.last_img read more

Steelers offense 1…pitiful

first_imgCincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis separates center Kyle Cook (64) and Pittsburgh Steelers strong safety Troy Polamalu in the second half of an NFL football game, Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, in Cincinnati. Cincinnati won 20-10. (AP Photo/Tom Uhlman)The Pittsburgh Steelers offense went from being terrible against the Tennessee Titans to pitiful against the Cincinnati Bengals. If they don’t find some kind of way to score points they will be in big trouble this weekend against the Chicago Bears. The Bears have looked very impressive in come from behind wins of 24-21 over the Bengals and 31-30 over the Minnesota Vikings last week.Bears’ Quarterback Jay Cutler has been very impressive, but the key for the Bears is can he stay healthy for an entire season. He has been injury prone, which led to coach Lovie Smith being fired despite a 10 win season. The Bears have a very balanced offense with one of the better ground games in the league to go with the passing attack. And of course they always have a solid defense.Cutler was 28 of 39 for 290 yards and 3 touchdowns against the Vikings, with his main two targets being wide receiver Brandon Marshall who had 7 catches for 113 yards, and tight end Martellus Bennett who had 7 catches for 76 yards, including the game winning catch and touchdown. The ground game complimented the passing game beautifully with Matt Forte picking up 90 yards on 19 carries.Even though the Steelers defense has played outstanding ball they will be thoroughly tested against the Bears potent offense. And if the Steelers fall behind early it may be lights out because it will be hard to come back on this defense. As for the Steelers offense, they have only been able to score 17 points in their first two games. The wide receivers haven’t been able to get open, they are dropping balls when they do, or Ben Roethlisberger is missing them. So far they haven’t even been close on the long ball. The ground game is non-existent picking up less than 80 yards in two games. Blame it on the offensive line. Blame it on the running backs. Blame it on the receivers. Blame it on the quarterback. They are all at fault. One thing for sure is the coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball had better fix something or this 0-2 is going to stretch out to 0-3, 0-4, 0-5…We could easily go into the bye week 0-4.The young Bengals, 1-1, are expected to battle the Baltimore Ravens for the AFC North division title, with the Steelers looking more and more like the 0-2 Cleveland Browns. Maybe the Steelers will win a game this season. The Bengals are solid on both sides of the ball with emerging young players blended in with a few veterans. They should continue to get better as the season progresses with these young players merging together. They actually look better than the Ravens, who are having to make some major adjustments with the departure of some key players, Ray Lewis in particular. The Steelers will face the 0-2 Vikings after the Bears.last_img read more
