Once in a lifetime

Quick, call in the cameras, send out the press releases, watch closely and notify the neighbors: Los Angeles’ elected officials are doing … their jobs! For all the pomp and circumstance surrounding the filling of the city’s 80,173rd pothole Tuesday, you’d think that Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and City Council members Wendy Greuel and Tom LaBonge have forgotten that this is the sort of thing they were elected – and get handsomely paid – to do. Don’t get us wrong: After years of neglect of the city’s roads, we’re thrilled that elected officials are finally taking potholes seriously. But let’s get real – this is no heroic effort. The politicians were merely using tax dollars that L.A. residents have paid for just that purpose. It’s great to see public servants actually serving the public. But it’s disheartening to see them act like this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
