Teller Cartel recorded the fastest qualifying mark for the Golden State Million Futurity trials when he raced 400 yards in 19.61 seconds late Friday night at Los Alamitos Race Course. The Oklahoma-bred Corona Carter colt finished a neck in front of Jumpn during the first of 12 divisions as the pair finished one-two among the top 10 qualifiers who will contest the $1,145,000 Golden State Million Futurity, which will be held Nov. 4. The favorite in the first division was Higher Flyer, who needed to qualify for the Nov. 4 final to remain eligible for the Los Alamitos Bonanza, which awards a bonus of $1 million to the 2-year-old who wins all three legs that make up the Bonanza. They include the three million-dollar races on the Los Alamitos schedule Ed Burke, Golden State and Los Alamitos futurities. Higher Flyer was third in the first division and was timed in 19.765 and wound up 10th among the qualifiers to keep her hopes alive for the $1 million bonus, but must win the finals of the Golden State and Los Alamitos futurities after winning the Ed Burke June 25. Teller Cartel had won only one of five starts prior to Friday night, but that was an upset victory in the world’s richest quarter horse race the $1.9 million All-American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs on Labor Day. Corona Crown paid $20.20 in taking the second division with a time of 19.655 to record the third fastest qualifying time, with Fishers Tale being runner-up in the second heat to rate ninth among the qualifiers with a 19.76 clocking. In Dispute (19.67) and See If I Care (19.705) won the 11th and eighth divisions to qualify fourth and fifth. The other two qualifiers were Wave Carver (19.715) and He Could Be Streakin (19.765), who ran first and second in the fifth division.
